If your child is anything like my oldest, you’re probably looking for a science camp for this summer! Here is the KC Kids Fun listing of 2009 Kansas City area science and nature camps.  Whether your kid is scientifically-inclined or just a nature-lover, there are some exceptional camps available around the metro for. Your first stop might be to check out the offerings of your local parks and rec department and then check out the super camps on our list (and on our General Day and Overnight Camps list).

Wildwood Outdoor Education Center (LaCygne, KS) offers 5-day residential camps for ages 8 to 15. Programming includes traditional camp activities, outdoor education, adventures and fantastic self-esteeming building activities. One week is set aside for girls ages 10 to 15 with an emphasis on leadership skills and self-esteem.

Wonderscope (Shawnee, KS)  Wonderscope Children’s Museum of Kansas City offers unique camps for children ages 5-10.  Camps encourage learning through the power of play and include themes from space to animals to inventions and more!  913-287-8888.

  • Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center (Kansas City, MO) offered a Discovery Camp and an Outdoor Skills Camp for older elementary school kids and middleschoolers last summer. Check back on their website as we get closer to summer for details on this summer’s activities.
  • Bear River Ranch Cub Creek Science Camp (Rolla, MO) has a residential summer camp for boys and girls, ages 7 to 16. The ultimate animal camp!
  • Camp Invention (several locations – KCK, Shawnee & Spring Hill, KS) is a hands-on science and creativity camp for grades 1 thru 6. Lots of different offering. Really interesting and something to check out!
  • Ernie Miller Park and Nature Center (Olathe, KS) hosts outdoor discovery camps for children ages 6-12. Hikes, environmental games and nature crafts are centered around a weekly theme. These camps fill up quickly!!
  • Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers 39 summer camp programs for ages 3-18.  Included are camps focusing on nature, dinosaurs, science, hiking and fishing!  Dates, locations and fees vary.
  • Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center Camps (Hutchinson, KS) has space camps for kids in grades 7 thru 10. This is an overnight camp and scholarships are available.
  • Kansas City Zoo Summer Camps (Kansas City, MO) offers some really neat week-long science and animal-related day camps for all ages.
  • Kansas Starbase (Kansas City, KS) is a really cool camp for kids who have finished 4th, 5th or 6th grades. 4 “Academies” are offered:  the Traditional one allows kids to discover and apply principles of aviation and rocketry.  The Robotics Academy uses special Lego robotics kits!  Kids can even build and launch rockets in Rocketry Academy, or peek into the future at Space Exploration Academy.
  • KU Survivor Engineering Camp (Lawrence, KS) -KU Survivor is a weeklong, guys-only intensive learning camp July 19-24 for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors, hosted by the University of Kansas School of Engineering. The camp lets students explore the different engineering disciplines through classes led by KU faculty.  The camp costs $500 and covers housing, meals and laboratory materials.   • Lakeside Nature Center (Kansas City, MO) offers a Summer of Science camp for kids from 6 to 12. Each day ends in the Camp Lake of the Woods pool!
  • Exchange City & EarthWorks (Kansas City, MO) – Our CuriosityCamps focus on fun mixed with academics! At Exchange City®, citizen campers, ages 10-14, become business entrepreneurs running a thriving city. Camps offered June 8-12 & July 13-17. At EarthWorks®, scientist campers, ages 8-12, become wildlife biologists exploring the fragile nature of wildlife including fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Camps offered June 22-26 & July 6-10.   • Mad Science KC (various locations) is offering several camps this summer for kids from preschool thru grade 6. They’ll learn about things such as rockets, NASA, earth sciences and robots. And it’ll be super fun!
  • Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary (Northland) has a fantastic summer program called EGADS (Earth Guardians Adventure Days). There are a variety of offerings including outdoor exploration, games, crafts and songs. There are camps for children from preschool through ninth grade.
  • Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library (Kansas City, KS) is an environmental learning center located at Wyandotte County Lake Park. This summer, the Schlagle Library will have a nature day camp for preschoolers, an outdoor discovery day camp for elementary age children, Destination Science camp for middleschoolers and a World of Flight camp also for middleschoolers. The older kids will have the option of spending one overnight at the camp during their session. Check these out – the prices are unbelievably good!
  • Outdoor Education Laboratory (south Johnson County, KS) is open to campers from kindergarten thru 6th grade. Kids get down and dirty, spending the day outside in the forest, learning about nature and science in a very hands-on and very fun environment. This camp is EXTREMELY popular – sign up quick!
  • Parkville Nature Sanctuary (Parkville, MO) offers three-day nature camps, exploring the trails, learning trail safety, discovering wild animal habitats, identifying trees and other nature-related activities. For ages 8 to 10. Spend three days in the woods!
  • Powell Gardens (Kingsville, MO – east of Lee’s Summit) is once again offering its incredible Summer Explorations program this year. Camps are offered for kids ages 9 to 14. Nature Explorers (for the younger set) will cover plant and water science. Ecology Explorers (for the older kids) explores sustainable living and “green” issues. Camps run from 9am to 3pm but extended care is available!
  • Project Discovery (Lawrence, KS) – Project Discovery is a weeklong residential summer camp for high school girls interested in engineering (two sessions: June 14-20 or July 12-18). Campers work closely with KU faculty and graduate students as they complete an engineering project. Participants get an up close view of KU and engineering facilities. The cost is $400 and covers housing, on-campus transportation, meals and laboratory materials.   • Science City (Kansas City, MO) offers summer camps for kids ages 6 to 12. Hands-on activities keep your kids interested in weekly themes related to biology, chemistry, engineering and space. They have great hours for working parents – definitely check this one out.
  • UMKC – Kansas City Summer Transportation Institute (Kansas City, MO) is a unique camp for high schoolers focused on various aspects of the transportation industry including career exploration in the transportation sector, skill building, teamwork and college preparation. A great opportunity for your older ones!
  • Wilderness Science Center Summer Environmental Workshop (south Overland Park, KS) is sponsored by the Blue Valley School District and is open to kids grades K thru 5. One week sessions, half-day programs.
  • William Jewell College (Liberty, MO) hosts week-long residential camps for 7th and 8th grade boys and girls. Campers have the opportunity to engage in activities related to biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. The camp curriculum also emphasizes leadership development and teambuilding. Evening activities are generally less formal. Scholarships are available!

  • YMCA (20 locations in the metro) offers camps for 5-15 year olds and run June 1- August 7.  Bonus:  before and after-camp care is available, as is financial assistance.
  • YouthTech Inc. (various locations) sponsors technology camps through other entities like Pembroke Hill, Barstow, Blue Valley Recreation and other parks & rec camps.  Check their website for more info on great computer camps like 3D game design, web design, animation and robotics.

  • Check out your local parks and recreation department. The Kansas City area parks and rec departments are really fabulous.  A great resource for parents and kids across the metro. Take a look at their summer catalogs – lots of offerings for every interest. You can find their websites by clicking the Classes link on the right side of this page.
  • Barstow School Summer Program (south Kansas City, MO) – week-long sessions for kids from preschool through high school age. Barstow has academic classes, sports clinics, Fun Factor day camp and great weekly themed camps. Extended day and lunch service available! My older kids attended the Mini Camp and Kindi Camp and loved it!
  • Blue Valley Recreation (south Johnson County, KS) has many different summer offerings including Camp Center Stage and Safety City. Other camps include sports, technology, dancing and Special Olympics. BVRC is a GREAT resource for summer fun!
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City (Kansas City, MO/Kansas City, KS/Independence, MO) has programs for kids from 5-18. You’ll need to call your local club for more details on this summer’s offerings!
  • Calvary Lutheran Church and School (south Kansas City, MO) offers summer care/camp for kids who have finished kindergarten through 5th grade. Lots of activities, field trips, etc. Good hours for working parents.
  • Camp Caliber at Kids R Kids School (Olathe, KS) has weekly-themed projects, activities and field trips. Great hours for working parents!
  • Camp Chippewa (Ottawa, KS) is a Methodist overnight camp with traditional camp activities for kids from K to 12th grade. (Kindergarten thru 3rd grade camps are just two nights and campers must have an parent or other adult with them.) All other camps are 3 or 5 night camps.
  • Camp Galilee (El Dorado Springs, MO) is a Methodist overnight camp with traditional camp activities for children from 8 to 18. Christian-based, this camp is northwest of Springfield, MO.
  • Camp Shawnee (Waldron, MO – Platte County near Parkville) – traditional day camps and overnight camps for ages 5 to 15. They also offer Operation Purple Camp for military children.
  • Camp Special Beginnings (Lenexa, KS) – summer day camp for kindergarten thru 6th grade, tons of activities, library time and field trips; flexible schedule for working parents!
  • Camp Taum Sauk (Lesterville, MO – southwest of Rolla, abt 6 hrs from KC) is a co-ed residential camp with 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 week sessions for kids ages 8 to 15. ACA accredited with every traditional camp activity.
  • Camp Tekakwitha at Prairie Star Ranch (Williamsburg, KS) – sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas City, KS, this is an overnight adventure camp for grades 5 through 12 (separate sessions). Great outdoor activities as well as prayer and Scripture. A one week Family Camp is also available.
  • Camp Wornall (Kansas City, MO) is held at the historic John Wornall House in the Loose Park/Brookside area. Kids ages 6 to 12 will learn about life and childhood in the 1800’s with tons of hands-on activities. They can even wear period dress.  Half- and full-day programs are available.
  • Camp Wood (Elmdale, KS) is a YMCA residential camp for kids ages 7 to 17. One and two week sessions are available and include traditional camps, horse camps, skateboard camp and music camps.
  • Clay-Platte Montessori School (Northland) offers camps for ages 2 – 12 including sports, science, art, cooking, computers, language, crafts and more.
  • Congregation Beth Shalom (Overland Park, KS) Fun in the Sun Summer Camps offer 2, 3 and 5 day options for kids ages 18 months through kindergarten. Half day programs with optional extended care until 3 pm.
  • Cub Scouts of Heart of America Council (various locations) sponsors three to five day long day camps for Cub Scouts. BB guns, bows and arrows, nature, crafts and games.
  • The Field Trip Club (Olathe, KS) – This is a state-licensed summer day camp for ages 5-14, with fun field trips each week. Call 913-780-6171 for information.

  • Gymboree Play & Music (various locations) usually has special play and music offerings during the summer for babies through age 5.
  • Heartland Center (Parkville, MO) hosts a day camp program for 1st through 5th graders (and overnight camps for 2nd through 12th graders). They have the typical sports, swimming, music, crafts and games of most camps as well as regular Bible study.
  • Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (Overland Park, KS) has summer day camps for all ages as well as sports, theatre and dance camps! Before- and after-care also available for working parents.
  • Johnson County Community College Summer Youth Enrichment (Overland Park, KS) has academic enrichment for kindergarten through 9th graders. There are some REALLY cool-sounding camp/courses at JCCC this summer!
  • Johnson County Museum (Shawnee, KS) day camps inspired by the museum’s children’s exhibit KidScape. Half day camps for ages 3 to 5; full day camps for ages 6 to 9. After-care available for full day camps!
  • Johnson County Parks & Recreation Summer Day Camps (various locations) include fun day camps, preschool camps, sports camps, performing arts camps and nature/science camps! Full- and partial-day programs available.
  • Kanakuk Kamps (Lake Taneycomo and Tablerock Lake, MO) are Christian-based overnight camps with 7, 13 and 25 day sessions. Ages 7 to 18, traditional camp activities. Golf camp and family camp also available.
  • Kansas City Urban Youth Center (KCMO) hosts a full-day camp for kids grades 1 thru 8. Mornings include literacy programming; afternoons feature field trips and fun!
  • Leawood Summer Camps (Leawood, KS) – Parks & Recreation half and full day camps for kids from K up to 17. Arts, sports, outdoor and “extreme tween” camps in addition to adventure camps held at City Park, Ironwoods Park and Community Center.
  • Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Historic Farm Summer History Camp (Olathe, KS) runs weeklong day camps throughout the summer. Each week is for a different age group and features a different theme. Watch as your kids learn as history comes alive!
  • Metropolitan Community College – Longview (Lee’s Summit, MO) sponsors programs for ages 3 -15 including horsemanship, American Girl, cartooning, robotics, stacking, Hannah Montana, dance, study skills, martial arts, painting and more. As of March 8, 2009, the website still has Spring 2009 offerings posted. Check back for summer offerings or call 816-672-2030.
  • Metropolitan Community College – Maple Woods (Northland) offers classes and camps for ages 8-14, covering topics such as art, drama, science, writing, animal care and sports. No info posted on their website yet as of March 8, 2009 but check back!
  • Missouri Military Academy Leadership & Confidence Camps (Mexico, MO) has overnight camps for boys ages 8 to 16. Traditional camp activities as well as military drills and leadership/confidence training.
  • My Gym (Overland Park, KS) has weeklong summer day camps for ages 2 to 8. Different themes each week. Crafts, sports, gymnastics, music and more! My children have attended several camps at My Gym and absolutely loved them…
  • North Kansas City Schools Community Education Services (North Kansas City, MO) has camps for ballet, dance, art, computer and drama – ages 4 through 18. We’ve jumped the gun again! As of March 8, 2009, NKC doesn’t have their summer offerings available yet through the website. Call them at 816-413-5494.
  • Notre Dame de Sion Elementary (Kansas City, MO) offers Sion Summer School for preschool through grade 8. The camp has an Around the World theme this summer and offers before- and after-camp extended care for working parents. Sion is partnering with UMKC Conservatory and the Coterie Theatre this summer to widen the already fabulous scope of their summer program!
  • Notre Dame de Sion High School (south Kansas City, MO) hosts Coterie Theatre camps and sports camps for girls in grades 5 – 9.
  • Oakhill Day School (Northland) offers many different sessions for age 2 through 8th grade. The sessions include cooking, computers, karate, academics, sports, swimming and more. Full- and part-day programs available.
  • Pembroke Hill School (Kansas City, MO) holds an extensive summer program, similar in breadth to the Barstow program, for kids ages 2-18. The most popular courses last year were astronomy, princess training, Fancy Nancy, debate, self-defense, SAT/ACT prep course and Lego Lovers! There are many more and the hours are excellent for working parents!
  • Rockhurst High School (Kansas City, MO) offers a wide variety of day camps for kids of elementary, middle and high-school ages, including academics, computers, music and sports.
  • Rock Springs Family Camp (Junction City, KS) – three day overnight sessions for Mom, Dad AND the kids! Horseback riding, swimming, hiking, fishing, trap shooting, crafts and more!
  • St. Patrick & St. Pius (Northland) host a summer academy full of four-day enrichment courses from cooking to academics to sports. Grades K – 8.
  • St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School (Kansas City, MO) offers morning and afternoon classes in art, music, theater, soccer, basketball, academics, cooking and more! Ages 3 to 13.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Overland Park, KS) sponsors several day camps for boys and girls in kindergarten through grade 8. Most offerings are sports camps with some dance, sewing and cooking thrown into the mix!
  • Shawnee Mission School District (Johnson County, KS) has an amazingly broad Summer Enrichment Program for students in preschool through 8th grade. Programs range from art, math, computers, sports, science and music to theatre, cooking, woodworking and foreign languages. This one looks awesome!
  • Tall Oaks Camp (Linwood, KS) hosts several day and overnight camps for the Disciples of Christ Christian Churches. Camps for kids K thru 12 are available as well as family camps.Check the website for details.
  • YMCA Summer Day Camps (various locations) The YMCA is one of the Kansas City metro’s best resources for kids’ camps. They’ve got sports camps, outdoor camps, fine arts camps and traditional day camps offered through many local school districts.
  • Youthfront Camps (near Edgerton and LaCygne, KS) has overnight Christian-based camps for kids from grades 3 through 12+. There are week-long sessions for older kids; half-week sessions for the younger ones. Traditional, fun camp activities!

  • Heartland Center (Parkville, MO) hosts a day camp program for 1st through 5th graders (and overnight camps for 2nd through 12th graders). They have the typical sports, swimming, music, crafts and games of most camps as well as regular Bible study.
  • Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (Overland Park, KS) has summer day camps for all ages as well as sports, theatre and dance camps! Before- and after-care also available for working parents.
  • Johnson County Community College Summer Youth Enrichment (Overland Park, KS) has academic enrichment for kindergarten through 9th graders. There are some REALLY cool-sounding camp/courses at JCCC this summer!
  • Johnson County Museum (Shawnee, KS) day camps inspired by the museum’s children’s exhibit KidScape. Half day camps for ages 3 to 5; full day camps for ages 6 to 9. After-care available for full day camps!
  • Johnson County Parks & Recreation Summer Day Camps (various locations) include fun day camps, preschool camps, sports camps, performing arts camps and nature/science camps! Full- and partial-day programs available.
  • Kanakuk Kamps (Lake Taneycomo and Tablerock Lake, MO) are Christian-based overnight camps with 7, 13 and 25 day sessions. Ages 7 to 18, traditional camp activities. Golf camp and family camp also available.
  • Kansas City Urban Youth Center (KCMO) hosts a full-day camp for kids grades 1 thru 8. Mornings include literacy programming; afternoons feature field trips and fun!
  • Leawood Summer Camps (Leawood, KS) – Parks & Recreation half and full day camps for kids from K up to 17. Arts, sports, outdoor and “extreme tween” camps in addition to adventure camps held at City Park, Ironwoods Park and Community Center.
  • Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Historic Farm Summer History Camp (Olathe, KS) runs weeklong day camps throughout the summer. Each week is for a different age group and features a different theme. Watch as your kids learn as history comes alive!
  • Metropolitan Community College – Longview (Lee’s Summit, MO) sponsors programs for ages 3 -15 including horsemanship, American Girl, cartooning, robotics, stacking, Hannah Montana, dance, study skills, martial arts, painting and more. As of March 8, 2009, the website still has Spring 2009 offerings posted. Check back for summer offerings or call 816-672-2030.
  • Metropolitan Community College – Maple Woods (Northland) offers classes and camps for ages 8-14, covering topics such as art, drama, science, writing, animal care and sports. No info posted on their website yet as of March 8, 2009 but check back!
  • Missouri Military Academy Leadership & Confidence Camps (Mexico, MO) has overnight camps for boys ages 8 to 16. Traditional camp activities as well as military drills and leadership/confidence training.
  • My Gym (Overland Park, KS) has weeklong summer day camps for ages 2 to 8. Different themes each week. Crafts, sports, gymnastics, music and more! My children have attended several camps at My Gym and absolutely loved them…
  • North Kansas City Schools Community Education Services (North Kansas City, MO) has camps for ballet, dance, art, computer and drama – ages 4 through 18. We’ve jumped the gun again! As of March 8, 2009, NKC doesn’t have their summer offerings available yet through the website. Call them at 816-413-5494.
  • Notre Dame de Sion Elementary (Kansas City, MO) offers Sion Summer School for preschool through grade 8. The camp has an Around the World theme this summer and offers before- and after-camp extended care for working parents. Sion is partnering with UMKC Conservatory and the Coterie Theatre this summer to widen the already fabulous scope of their summer program!
  • Notre Dame de Sion High School (south Kansas City, MO) hosts Coterie Theatre camps and sports camps for girls in grades 5 – 9.
  • Oakhill Day School (Northland) offers many different sessions for age 2 through 8th grade. The sessions include cooking, computers, karate, academics, sports, swimming and more. Full- and part-day programs available.
  • Pembroke Hill School (Kansas City, MO) holds an extensive summer program, similar in breadth to the Barstow program, for kids ages 2-18. The most popular courses last year were astronomy, princess training, Fancy Nancy, debate, self-defense, SAT/ACT prep course and Lego Lovers! There are many more and the hours are excellent for working parents!
  • Rockhurst High School (Kansas City, MO) offers a wide variety of day camps for kids of elementary, middle and high-school ages, including academics, computers, music and sports.
  • Rock Springs Family Camp (Junction City, KS) – three day overnight sessions for Mom, Dad AND the kids! Horseback riding, swimming, hiking, fishing, trap shooting, crafts and more!
  • St. Patrick & St. Pius (Northland) host a summer academy full of four-day enrichment courses from cooking to academics to sports. Grades K – 8.
  • St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School (Kansas City, MO) offers morning and afternoon classes in art, music, theater, soccer, basketball, academics, cooking and more! Ages 3 to 13.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Overland Park, KS) sponsors several day camps for boys and girls in kindergarten through grade 8. Most offerings are sports camps with some dance, sewing and cooking thrown into the mix!
  • Shawnee Mission School District (Johnson County, KS) has an amazingly broad Summer Enrichment Program for students in preschool through 8th grade. Programs range from art, math, computers, sports, science and music to theatre, cooking, woodworking and foreign languages. This one looks awesome!
  • Tall Oaks Camp (Linwood, KS) hosts several day and overnight camps for the Disciples of Christ Christian Churches. Camps for kids K thru 12 are available as well as family camps.Check the website for details.
  • YMCA Summer Day Camps (various locations) The YMCA is one of the Kansas City metro’s best resources for kids’ camps. They’ve got sports camps, outdoor camps, fine arts camps and traditional day camps offered through many local school districts.
  • Youthfront Camps (near Edgerton and LaCygne, KS) has overnight Christian-based camps for kids from grades 3 through 12+. There are week-long sessions for older kids; half-week sessions for the younger ones. Traditional, fun camp activities!
