Kansas City Weekend Roundup: Oct 7-10, 2011

This beautiful weather has been amazing– it almost makes the unbearable July heat seem like a distant memory!  The weekend is ideal for checking out one of the many pumpkin patches around KC (yep, we’ve got a list for that!) or even for packing a lunch and spending some time at a neighborhood park or playground.  (We’ve got a pretty good list of those, too.)  Have a great weekend, KC Kids Fun friends!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2011:
  • ”School’s out” for a day ART Workshops at ARTrageous in Prairie Village! “Miss Julie” has looked up many school schedules and aligned ½-Day ART workshops with your days off (or early release)! Each one is totally FUN and different from the others. Grades 1st through 8th! “Miss Julie” creates awesome projects with engaging and challenging processes.
  • FREE FAMILY FUN NIGHTS at Mission, KS Sylvester Powell Community Center. FREE. Includes: open swim, arts & crafts, video games, open basketball and racquetball, a movie and free use of our entire Indoor Playground. 5:00 to 8:00pm (Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center, 6200 Martway, Mission, KS 66202) No pre-registation is required. Participants can show up the night of the event and there are no residency or membership requirements. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Buck Night at the Roeland Park Community Center – $1 gets you in the door for an evening full of family fun including crafts and games. Don’t forget to try your luck at BINGO! Make an evening of it with our $1 specials on hotdogs and snacks. You won’t want to miss the ice cream dessert!   • Fall Night Hike at George Owens Nature Park, Independence, MO – We’ll explore different park habitats and observe nocturnal animals along with playing games and learning about our senses. The hike will take place on uneven terrain and therefore may be unsuitable for small children. No strollers. Please call (816) 325-7115 for more details. Pre-registration is required. 8 years of age and up. 7:30 – 9 p.m. This is a free event.
  • Friday Night Ghost Tours on Independence Square – At 7, 8, or 9 pm, tour 1859 Jail, wagon ride, ghost stories. Limited to 15 with advance reservations. Call 461-0065. Location: Historic Independence Square, Main, Lexington, Liberty & Maple
  • Itty Bitty Campout at George Owens Nature Park, Independence, MO – Family with children up to age 8 are invited to pack up the car and go on their first camping trip to George Owens Nature Park. A few activities will be scheduled during the campout, with plenty of time to do some exploring on your own. Families must bring their own camping supplies. Friday 5 p.m. to Saturday 9 a.m. Cost is $10 per child. Group size is limited, so reserve your spot by calling (816) 325-7843.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2011:
  • Saturday Morning ART Workshop: Lots of ART with Printmaking and Stamping!! 9:30-12:00am. at ARTrageous Creative Studio in south Prairie Village, grades 1-8. The Children will create LOTS of copies of their creations by creating their own stamps and using brayers and colored inks, create multicolored copies to share with friends and family, all inspired by their choice of topic! The cost per child is $25.00 to be paid on arrival that day.   • Whimsical Woods at Ernie Miller Park, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe, KS – Enjoy a walk on the trail with the award-winning Nature Center staff. Costumed storybook characters will delight and entertain audiences of all ages. Meet with the Good Fairy and Forest Friends. Live animals, stories, songs, and surprises will highlight childhood favorites. Group sessions begin every 15 minutes starting at 1 p.m. and last approximately one hour. The cost of the program to be paid at the site is $5 per person including adults. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held indoors. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2011:
  • Hands-on History at the National World War I Museum(KCMO) – 1pm to 3pm – Ever wonder what the objects behind the glass feel like or how heavy they are? Spark your child’s imagination and help bring history to life! Great War artifacts will be available to see and touch in the Museum gallery. Included with regular Museum admission.
  • Exploring Abstraction, workshop at the Kemper Museum(KCMO) – Artist Nicole Mauser will lead students through The Abstract Autograph and teach students about the history of abstraction in art. Students will then create an experimental work of art.

Kansas City Metro Indoor Swimming Pools

Oh, the weather outside is frightful. So, let’s go swimming! Right?

Right! Why not mix it up a little this fall and winter around the Kansas City metro? There are a lot of great indoor pools and community centers with public swimming hours. You’ll want to double check their websites for up-to-date hours and fees – but what a great change of pace for you and for the kids as the days get shorter and much, much COLDER! (Our list is just pools open to the public – many communities, schools and fitness centers also have indoor pools but no open swim availability. If we’ve missed a local indoor pool that is open to the public for recreational swimming, let us know!)
