Trunk or Treat in KC: 2011

Trunk or Treat time is upon us…there are so many schools, churches and organizations that host these popular events, we need to rely on YOU to be our eyes and ears!  We’ve received word about a few of these events, but are asking that if you know of a Trunk or Treat that is open to the public, you add the info below as a comment.  Thanks for your help!

  • Join us for a FREE Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 29 from 2-4pm. We will have, candy, games, prizes, and of course more candy! At 3:00 there will be a costume contest, please keep costumes kid appropriate. Antioch Community Church is located at 4805 NE Antioch Rd, KC MO 64119. Visit www.acckc.org for more info.
  • Friday – October 28th 4-6pm:  M&I in Shawnee is hosting a Trunk–or–Treat event — providing children in the community a safe and fun trick-or-treating alternative. The event will be held in the parking lot of the bank.  Children simply walk up to each vehicle in the parking lot and trick-or-treat. The vehicles are sponsored by more than 35 Shawnee businesses and restaurants. The Police and Fire Departments will be there promoting lessons on safety.  They will also be collecting canned goods to benefit the Harvesters Community Food Network.
  • Monday, October 31st, 10-11am– Halloween Snack and a Story Event.  $5.  You are invited to bring your small toddler/preschool age children to hear a “spooky” Halloween story and enjoy healthy Halloween snacks.  This event will be located in the upstairs conference room.  Costumes are optional!  Where: Englewood Hy-Vee   207 NE Englewood Road, KC, MO  64118.   Children ages 5 and younger with parent or guardian.  Please sign up in advance.  Contact Keli Hurst at khurst@hy-vee.com.
  • What: FREE Kids Club Halloween Party. Where: Whole Foods Market on Metcalf, Sunday, October 23rd from 1-4pm.  7401 W. 91st Street  Overland Park, KS 66212. (913) 652-9633.  Description: Join us for a Free Halloween Event at Whole Foods Market on Metcalf in Overland Park, KS on Sunday, October 23rd from 1-4pm.  We’ll have music, face painting, crafts, and lots of FUN! The event begins with a Dino O’Dell live music concert from 1-2pm. Kids, come in your cutest costumes and parade around the store visiting each department for a FREE special treat!  The first 250 kids get a goodie bag too.  Parents, while you’re here find great tasting snacks for Halloween.  All of our food is free from artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats.  Come taste the difference!
  • Russell Stover Candies announced today the 13th annual Halloween Candy Giveaway will be Monday, October 31st. The event will be held at the Russell Stover Candies Store at 2814 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Fairway, KS 66205in The Shops of Fairway, across from Houlihan’s.  Free Halloween candy will be given away to all ages from 10 am to 4 pm on Monday, October 31st 2011.
  • Additionally, Russell Stover Candies Retail Store will host the 3rd annual children’s Halloween party from 2 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, October 30th 2011.  Festivities include face painting, caramel apple walk, games, and a costume parade followed by a costume contest.  For both events the Russell Stover Candies Retail Store will be decked inside and out with fun, spooky decorations including an orange light in the cupola, lots of pumpkins, hay bales, a graveyard with ghosts, and costumed employees.

Weekend Roundup 10/22/10

Oh My!  There’s just an amazing amount to do in and around KC this weekend. Trunk or Treats are kicking off this weekend, too.  By the way–drop us a comment here and let us know when your favorite Trunk or Treat is taking place! We’re relying on you guys–our eyes and ears– to help us compile our list this year!  Have a great weekend.  PS- The pumpkins are my husband’s handiwork from last year.  I think he’s got to step up his game this year…  =)

  • Gymboree Play & Music in Olathe & Prairie Village is hosting a Pumpkin Patch Party – Dress up and join the Halloween fun at Gymboree: Pumpkin activities, seasonal craft projects, music, snacks, dancing, parades and more! 6pm to 7pm – Cost: $15 for the 1st child, $10 for each additional child.   • Friday Night Haunted Ghost Tours on the Square, Independence, MO – October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 – Experience a 40-50 minute “ghostly” tour of the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum plus a covered wagon historical live narrated tour sharing ghost stories and yarns of haunted places on the historic Independence Square. 7, 8, and 9 p.m., 15 maximum in each tour with reservations. $18 for adults, $12 children ages 7-11, not recommended for children under 7. 816-461-0065 for details and reservations.
  • Enchanted Forest – George Owens Nature Park, 1601 S. Speck Road, Independence, MO – October 22, 23, 29 and 30 – A non-scary event designed for ages 3-9, this annual event sponsored by the Powerhouse Theater Foundation and Independence Parks and Recreation transports children to the Enchanted Forest, hosted by Effie, the Forest Fairy. Storybook, popular movie characters and fairy tales come to life as groups are guided along candlelit trails.   • Pumpkin Express on the Belton Grandview & Kansas City Railroad, Belton, MO – train ride with Halloween fun & games – 12:30pm, 2:00pm and 3:30pm
  • Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art Art Classes: Contemporary Creations – Designs in Clay (ages 8 – 11) – Learn about artistic design and create a clay plate with your own designs.   • Big Bad Pumpkin Derby, The Theatre in the Park, 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee Mission, KS – Build and enter your own pumpkin race car for just $25 per entry and compete in a double elimination derby on our very fast course in the parking lot at The Theatre in the Park, starting at 10 am.   • Haunted Kansas at Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe, KS – 6:30pm to 9pm -Walk through the trails of Ernie Miller Park and listen to the stories of long ago. Group sessions begin every 20 minutes starting at 6:30 pm and program is approximately 1 hour. This is an outdoor event, dress appropriately. This event is recommended for ages 8 & up and all children must be accompanied by Parent/Guardian or one adult chaperone per group of 5. Program is $5 per person, including adults.   • Halloween Family ConcertFest begins at 2 p.m., with a reception in the Carlsen Center lobby at Johnson County Community College. At 12:00 p.m. there will be a stage parade for children in costume, children’s ballet by Legacy School and a concert by the Overland Park Orchestra, all in Yardley Hall. Patrons are encouraged to attend the event in costume. After the concert, each child will receive a gift bag of candy provided by the Friends of Overland Park Arts. The Halloween Family ConcertFest is free and open to the public.

Kansas City Halloween Fun

We  wrapped up the Halloween costume-creation process last night, just in time for today’s classroom parties. I was cutting an old t-shirt to make into a “kung fu headband” at about 10pm last night. But everyone got out the door with costumes in hand this morning. So, it’s all good.
