One of the many things to enjoy in KC each summer is a wide variety of outdoor theater. We even have some free options listed! Here’s what’s happening this summer:

Starlight Theatre: This summer’s family- friendly selections include The Little Mermaid, running now through June 11, Mamma Mia! (suitable for most audiences), June 23-25, and An American in Paris, July 11-16. Starlight shows begin at 8pm, and it’s a pretty magical experience for the kids. Also good to know: Starlight offers complimentary booster seat at the Ovation gift store if you’re worried the kids won’t be able to see!

Theatre in the Park: Located at Shawnee Mission Park, Theatre in the Park is a relaxing way to enjoy your evening. This summer’s family-friendly options include the Gershwin classic, Crazy for You (PG), June 16-24, Camp Rock, June 30-July 8, Back to the 80s (PG), July 14-22, and Beauty and the Beast, July 28-August 5. TTIP also has a handful of $1 movie nights throughout the summer. Bring your picnic baskets early (box office opens at 6pm, doors open at 6:30pm) to find a good spot and let the kids run around before the show, or purchase reserved seats. Shows start at 8:30pm.

Leawood Stage Company: If you’re watching your summer budget, Leawood Stage Company’s Annie production features the classic Broadway musical under the stars at Ironwoods Park Amphitheater, 147th & Mission Road, Leawood, KS. All shows are free and begin at 8pm on July 13, 14, 15, 16 & 20, 21, 22.

Gladstone Theatre in the Park: Another free option, featuring two favorite classics, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, July 7-9, and The Wizard of Oz, August 4-6 at Oak Grove Park, at the corner of NE 76th Street and N Troost, Gladstone, MO. Shows begin at 8:30pm, and tickets and parking are free, bring your own seats!

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival: Another free option, this festival celebrates its 25th year with the performance of Hamlet June 13-July 2 at Southmoreland Park, just east of the Country Club Plaza. This year’s festival features KC favorite, Nathan Darrow, from House of Cards and Gotham. The doors open at 6pm, and entertainment and education happens before the show, which begins at 7:30. It’s an easy way to start exposing your kids to Shakespeare!
