My husband and I joined countless BBQ-eatin’, music-lovin’ Kansas Citians on Friday night for the 30th annual American Royal BBQ. My long, thick mess of a hairdo must have trapped a majority of the smoke–I can still smell it, two showers later! We had a blast. Thanks to my parents for keeping the kids for the night–we really enjoyed all of the great food! And especially the drink!!
For the uninitiated, the purpose of the American Royal is “…to provide scholarship, education, awards and competitive learning experiences that reward hard work, leadership skills and agrarian values.” The BBQ was just one of the many events which many locals look forward to each and every year.
Did you know that the 2009 Season actually began in March?!? There have been horse shows, camps and other American Royal activities going on since spring. Things really kicked into high gear with the parade, which was on Sept. 26, 2009. In addition to this weekend’s BBQ (billed as the “World Series of Barbeque”), popular events yet to come include the Equine Extravaganza (Oct. 10, 2009), the BOTAR ball (Oct. 17, 2009), and lots of horse shows, bull riding, livestock contests and even a youth rodeo!
I can remember yearly grade-school field trips out to the American Royal–where we’d watch the rodeo and get up close to the animals in the World of Agriculture. This year, there’s even a “mobile dairy classroom” which promises to be a huge hit. My husband swears that kids would leave the Royal with chameleons, goldfish and other assorted pets?!? Does anyone else remember going on those fall field trips to the American Royal? And leaving with random pets???? ENJOY!
